FeedFlix: Objective Measure of the Value of Netflix

FeedFlix Review

If you've ever wanted to know if you're getting your money's worth out of your online DVD rental service (and really, who among us has never calculated their rentals and done a quick cost-benefit analysis?), FeedFlix is a great little service that you might like.

FeedFlix is free of charge, and works by gathering XML feeds from Netflix to generate usage statistics for you and other FeedFlix users. It makes it very easy to literally see if you're getting the most out of your subscription.

Signing up is a piece of cake. Head to FeedFlix, and enter your Netflix username and password. It's important to note that Feedflix is not associated with Netflix; they just consume Netflix RSS feeds and obtain an authorization token directly from Netflix.

Once you do this, FeedFlix will start analyzing your rental and return history from your RSS fees. Within a few minutes, your home page should be filled with some interesting numbers. It's probably easiest to watch the video above to see how this looks, but here are some stats you'll find:

  • Average rentals per month
  • Average number of days you hold movies
  • The calculated cost per DVD delivered to your door
  • Average cost per total rentals (physical plus on demand)
  • Trend chart of your weekly rentals
  • How your numbers compare to other FeedFlix users

You'll also find some interesting aggregate information about users of the Netflix service in general. For example, how your usage and return rates compare to others, what the most requested movies are, which movies are stocked in the largest quantities, historical rentals and favorites, and more.

All-in-all, it's a very straightforward, focused application meant to answer one question: Am I getting my money's worth from Netflix? In my case, the answer is a resounding 'YES!'

Being a long-time, active online DVD rental fan, I have some inside perspectives on both Blockbuster and Netflix. Check out my Netflix and Blockbuster review if you're thinking about joining one of these services. It is the most detailed, objective review available for these two services.
